Kinja'd!!!

Since RB/SR red/yellow/beige top motors are all the rage these days(damn kids and their new fads), have a Nissan motor I actually know something about for your time...

So if I play my cards right, I should have 3 more semesters of college left before I have this nifty little thing called a degree. I'm majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering and since this next summer I should only be taking a class or two and they will most likely be online, I'd like to find some sort of internship or something to get my foot in the door before looking for a real job. In the area I'm in, I could easily do that at just about any of the plethora of government contractors that work for the 4 bases within 80 miles, but I don't really want to do that. I know that I'll probably end up working for one of them down the road, but I want to do something interesting for at least a little bit before selling my soul to the man. I really find embedded systems and control structures interesting, and I'm pretty good at that kind of thing, and had thought about doing something automotive with it(I'm more versed in all of that than most). Last spring I sent some nicely worded cover letters and my resume to a few companies that I thought I could be of benefit to(Cobb Tuning and a racing team that does all their in house development) and didn't get any replies, even after a follow up. Not. One.

So, anyone else gone through this and have any tips, ideas for where to try, ways to approach it? I won't go as far as to ask for a hook up or good word since you don't really know me well enough to speak of my character or skills, but I just don't want to completely strike out again.

Thanks a bunch Oppo.

i've gotten the last 2 jobs i've had by actually walking in and just asking if there is some1 i could talk to. they were both smaller companies. I feel like they are impressed that i have the balls to just walk in. just say I am here to drop off a resume and would like to be able to hand it over directly to either the person in charge of hiring or the person for whom i'd be working for. However i've done this in other offices and they basically told to fuck off and probably threw the resume straight into a firepit. Ther was another place that was nice to me, and said we're not hiring right now try back in a couple weeks and after a year of doing this they gave up and gave me a job. Just go be a pain in the ass, just do it nicely

I got the programming job I have now by frequenting a bar. But, that is probably not the best advice I can give.

If you start with one of the contractors it may accelerate your progress towards a security clearance. Those are apparently very valuable.

Does your college have a career center? I applied to a couple by just searching through job postings and finding some interesting smaller companies. You should have no problem getting a bunch of jobs as an ECE.

I would do that, except getting a gig at a place like the ones I'm looking at would mean moving there for the summer for the job or something, I can't exactly just walk into Cobb Tuning in Plano, TX when I live in Florida. If there were local places I would definitely do that though.

A security clearance would be helpful with the government jobs but I really want to stay away from them if I can. And they do have a career center but all they really do is hook you up with the local contractors, which isn't exactly what I want to do at the moment. I just want something truly interesting, and hopefully automotive related, to do for a couple months and see if that's the direction I want to go in before school is over and I have to start acting like an adult.

I think I'll just try the bar idea. ;)

This area really don't have anything that really would work in that field. The only automotive places that are close are shops that just do bolt on stuff and 'tuning'. I mean I know how to do that stuff and could probably get a job at a few of them, but I don't really like them and it doesn't really use any of the actual engineering and development skills that I'd like to put to use.
